We have been working on the number word before and the number word after a given number. I created these Heart Missing Number cards for my students to use during math centers or small groups to practice with this skill. It's festive for February or really any time of year since hearts are always fun for kids. Grab your free download (found below) and some numbers or a dry erase marker and your students are ready for some math fun!

I had some number mini erasers from the Target Dollar Spot that work well with this, but you could use number magnets OR have your students write the number with a dry erase marker. I grabbed a container of the number erasers, a festive heart bucket for the cards, and we were ready to find the missing number.

Students have to use their knowledge of number before and after to determine the missing number. Once they determine the missing number, they put that number on the card.

The cards in this set work with numbers 1-10. This would be perfect to use in a small group or to have out as a math center.

Recipe for Teaching

A warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows is always a fun winter treat! This Hot Chocolate Match activity will be a fun math warm-up, math center, or small group activity to use with your students or your own kids at home.

I have included cards to work on numbers 1-20. There are hot chocolate mug cards with ten frames and marshmallows with the matching number. I have also included two recording sheets in your FREE download (found below). One recording sheet works with the numbers 1-10 and one works with the numbers 1-20. This is an easy way to differentiate depending on the needs of the kids you are working with.

Students simply match the hot chocolate mug ten frame card to the marshmallow number card. When they find the match, they trace that on their recording sheet.

This would be fun for a math center activity or to use in small groups. You could also put these cards in a winter themed sensory bin and have your students find the matching cards within the sensory bin. There are lots of ways to use these cards in your classroom!

Recipe for Teaching

I recently shared a picture of a math chat poster that I used with my students on Instagram and many of you had a lot of interest in using it with your students. These math chat posters are a great way to incorporate math, reading, and writing skills within your classroom. They are great for number sense math warm-ups and also practice speaking and listening skills with your young mathematicians.

I typically glue the math chat poster on my piece of chart paper. Then I ask students to share which picture they can count for us. In the example below, I would ask the friend called on if they wanted to count the leaves, pinecones, squirrels, owls, or apples.
The first friend decided to count the leaves - "1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I see 5 leaves." I also always try to ask my students, "How many?" after they count so they are really showing an understanding of quantity.
I write the sentence that matches what the student says.
I also like to draw a dot arrangement under the number. This way students are seeing the picture representation of the number in the poster, the numeral representation, and the dot representation. Seeing numbers in multiple ways helps build number sense in our youngest math learners.
We repeat until all pictures on the poster have been counted.

Happy Winter! Aren't penguins just the cutest?! This Penguin Spin and Write will have your students working with numbers 11-20. They will be counting dots, subitizing, and writing the number. It's perfect for independent work, partner work, or a math station.

This activity is super easy to prepare. I first printed the Penguin Spin and Write mat on white cardstock (free download found below). I printed the color version, but there is also a black and white version that could be printed on colored cardstock. I recommend laminating the mat so students can use a dry erase marker with it. Then I grabbed a pencil and paper clip for the spinner. I also grabbed a dry erase marker for writing the number and an eraser. Then we were ready for some Penguin Spin and Write.

To start, students first spun the 11-20 spinner. Then they counted the dots on the ten frame. Students could also subitize (instantly recognize) the ten frame arrangement. Then students wrote that matching number on a penguin belly. In the picture below, the student spun a ten frame with 17 dots. They recognized that ten dots and seven more dots was 17.

The student wrote 17 in a penguin belly.

Students continued spinning, counting, and writing until they had filled in all of the penguin bellies with numbers.

Students could erase the numbers and begin the activity again if there was still time left to work. My blogging friends and I have teamed up to bring you some FREE penguin themed resources! Check out all of these amazing resources below!

They write the number in the first penguin belly. They spin the spinner again and write that number in the second penguin belly. Students compare the numbers to determine which number is greater and which number is less. There is a number line for students to use to help compare the numbers.

We love camping and making s'mores during the summer! This Marshmallow Coverall is perfect to use over the summer. Just grab the coverall board, two dice, some markers for covering and you are set for "s'more" summer fun!

This activity is super easy to prepare. I first printed the Marshmallow Coverall board on white cardstock. The free download (found below) also has a black and white version included for color saving options. It would look nice printed on a bright colored cardstock. I recommend laminating the boards for durability for future use. I also grabbed two dice and some pom poms to cover the numbers. Then we were ready for Marshmallow Coverall!

I had my students working in partners for this activity. Students first started by rolling two dot cubes. Then they combined the dots to add. This told them which number to cover on the coverall board with a pom pom.

Students continued rolling the dot cubes and adding on each turn. In the example below, 4 and 2 were rolled. Students said, "4 + 2 = 6 " to their math partner they were working with and then covered that number on their board.

Students continued rolling, adding, and covering until all of the marshmallows were covered on their Marshmallow Coverall board.

This would make a great math station for your students!
*You could also have your students use two numeral cubes. This would be a great way to differentiate for students who are ready to move past combining the dots to add.

Recipe for Teaching

We have been busy bees working on addition and subtraction in kindergarten! These addition and subtraction bug story problems are perfect to work on addition and subtraction skills with your young learners. My students loved them!

These are easy to prepare. I first printed the materials I needed. The free download (found below), includes an addition and subtraction story problem. I chose to do the addition story problem with my students so I printed the grass story mat, the story problem page, and the bees and butterflies. I like to have my students glue their pages to an 11x17 sheet of construction paper so I also grabbed some of that, in addition to some scissors and glue. Then we were ready for some bug story problems! They each got 10 butterflies and 10 bees. My students were able to choose how many butterflies and how many bees they wanted to put in their story problem. I love doing open-ended type math problems because it allows my students some choice in their work.

Once students decided how many bees and butterflies they wanted to have in their story problem, they then cut out that many of each and used a glue stick to glue them on the paper with the grass.

Students then completed the blank lines in the story problem and the equation to match the number of butterflies and bees. They also got to color the bugs they used in their problem.

I was so pleased with how my students did with this and they really enjoyed doing it. Check out some of their awesome work! I love how some of them added some extra details into their work!
