Does it feel like winter where you are??  We haven't seen any real snow accumulations just yet, but it has been cold!  These snowman teen number and ten frame cards will have your students thinking winter!  Plus, they are great for working with those tricky teen numbers!

To prepare this activity, I just printed the cards on white cardstock.  I laminated them because I knew that little hands would be using them.  Then I just used my paper cutter to cut out the cards along the solid black line.

This set of cards includes cards for numbers 11-19.  These numbers are always tricky for my students (I mean why isn't 15 "five-teen"?!?!).  I wanted something fun for them to use when practicing these numbers.

The great part about these cards is that they can be used in different ways:
*Give students cards and have them match the number with the ten frame.
*Shuffle cards and lay them out to play a memory game with them.
*Have students match cards and then use a manipulative of choice to count out that same number.  Cotton balls would be a cute idea since they look like snowballs!

These cards are great to use with your students as a math warm-up, as partner work, at a math station, or with a small math group.

My students love when we use food for math.  I always find that my students are so engaged and excited about it.  This is probably because they know they get a little treat when they finish!

I recently posted an image on Instagram of an idea that I thought of for tens and ones using m&m candies.

I had the idea to use the snack size bags of m&m's for the lesson.  I may have sampled a bag just to make sure there would be the right amount of m&m's.  I planned to have my students find how many m&m's they have in their bag, how many groups of ten, and how many extra ones.  I knew it would fit perfectly with the Common Core standards we have been focusing on:
K.NBT.1a Compose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8)

K.NBT.1b Decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8)

I first modeled this activity for my students.  Modeling is definitely important with our young learners so they know exactly what is expected of them.  Then I sent them off to their seats to workThey loved it and did such a nice job with the lesson!

This week I'm highlighting something I did in my classroom this week that was SNOW much fun!!

We have really been working on understanding 10 and some more in kindergarten.  We use games, ten frames, Rekenreks, dice, spinners, etc.  A few weekends ago while watching the Ravens game, I suddenly got the idea to make an activity for my students to "Build a Teen Number Snowman."  My students are pretty much obsessed with all things Frozen so I thought this would be PERFECT!  I made snowmen for the numbers 11-19.  Here is a picture of it in action in my classroom this week!
I passed out a card to each student and then they had to go around and find their group of 3 friends to build the teen number snowman.  They LOVED it!!  They were super excited for me to take the picture of their completed snowman.

The build a snowman activity was a perfect warm-up for my lesson which was this:
The snowman was copied on 11x17 paper so they had plenty of room.  They were able to pick a number, 11-19, and then draw the dots on the ten frames to represent the number.  I just had them use crayon, but I could have used Bingo dobbers, stamps, or stickers!  After they filled in their ten frames, they had to complete the sentence: 10 and ___ more is ___.  I LOVE how these turned out and the kids LOVED making them!

If you would like to purchase my "Build a Teen Number Snowman" activity click the image below to go to my TpT store!  It is only $1!!
